L.A.'s NEWEST MURALS COLUMN

Adel Rakhshani, “Turtle Mural,” “Whale Mural,” and “Shark Mural,” three murals along the Los Angeles River channel at Rosecrans Ave.; at Somerset Blvd.; and at Alondra Blvd., Paramount, 2002. Sponsored by the City of Paramount general fund.
Large, decorative murals of sea animals are each location are part of a city beautification project. The animals are swimming against the stream of the river. Each mural measures approximately 40 x 350 feet.

Ricardo Mendoza, “Sculpting Another Destiny,” Echo Park Ave. and Sunset Blvd., Echo Park, 2002. Sponsored by City of L.A. under Federal "Targeted Neighborhood Initiative."
The mural's focal point is an earth mother figure which extends around the building. Lotus blossoms honor the giant flowers the blossom in Echo Park Lake, just a few blocks away. A major inspiration for the artist was Claribel Alegria, a Central American poet whose work often addresses issues of social justice.

A history of the host city presented in a photo-collage of key individuals and historical moments, an approach that Mortimer has invoked in various other of his murals.

• Geographic and cultural diversity
• Feasibility
• Public Access
