JEAN SWIGGETT


Biographical Information

Born in Franklin, Indiana, Swiggett (1910-1988) moved to Long Beach at age two. He studied art at San Diego State University (B.A. 1934) and the University of Southern California (M.F.A. 1939). In 1940 Swiggett completed a mural for the post office of his birthplace through the Treasury Department's Section of Painting and Sculpture. Later he won a competition to paint murals on two cruise ships of the American President Line. From 1946-1977 he taught at San Diego State, serving as chairman of the art department for six years. His oil paintings and works on paper have been exhibited in solo shows in southern California as well as nationwide.
