KAY NIELSEN
Biographical Information
Foremost a book illustrator, Nielsen (1886-1957) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and studied art in Paris at the Academie Julienne. In 1911 he moved to London, where he was soon exhibiting his drawings and watercolors, and illustrating limited editions of fairy tales. In 1936 he settled in Los Angeles, where he worked as actor, director, set designer, and muralist for the rest of his life. He was hired by Disney Studio as an art director for the animation classic, Fantasia, doing the storyboard sketches of the demon Chernobog for the Bald Mountain sequence. His last mural was for Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
