BEN MESSICK

Biographical Information

Born and raised in the Ozarks of Missouri, Messick (1901-1981) came to Los Angeles in 1924. The following year he received a three-year scholarship to study at Chouinard Art Institute. During the Depression he assisted on several New Deal projects, most of which have since been destroyed or removed. These include the murals at the Frank Wiggins Trade School, now Trade Tech (destroyed), the Los Angeles County Hall of Records (in storage), and the Old State Building. He later worked as a fashion artist for Robinson's department store, and as a sketch artist for the Disney and MGM studios.
