EMIL JEAN KOSA, JR.


Biographical Information

Kosa (1903-1968) was best known as a landscape painter, winning many awards and exhibiting his work in solo and group shows throughout California. Between 1928 and 1933 he concentrated on murals. Among the projects he completed outside Los Angeles were the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento and the Casino on Catalina Island. Born in Paris, he and his family immigrated to the United States when he was four years old, but in 1912 they moved back to Czechoslavakia. His father, Emil Kosa, Sr., was a self-taught itinerant artist. Emil Jr. began his art education at the Prague Academy, then continued his studies in Los Angeles and Paris. He later taught art at Otis and Chouinard Art institutes as well as at the Laguna School of Art. For 35 years Kosa was a special effects artist for 20th Century Fox Studios, winning an Academy Award in 1963 for his work on the film, Cleopatra. In addition, between 1940 and 1968 he completed more than 75 portrait commissions.
