WILLIE HERRON III

Biographical Information

Herron grew up in East Los Angeles and while a senior in high school won scholarships to take life drawing courses at Otis Art Institute and Art Center College of Design. He started doing murals in 1972197>the same year he began to collaborate with artists Patssi Valdez, Gronk, and Harry Gamboa, Jr. They called themselves Asco (me da asco means 169>it makes me puke170> in Spanish). After first doing murals together, they soon began to activate their art, seeking to undermine stereotypes with their street performances. Commercial art jobs have been an important source of income for Herr¢n since high school. About three years ago he and his family moved to Laguna Hills, in Orange County. There he co-owns a successful commercial design studio, producing logos and signs and doing fauve finishes for commercial and residential clients. Among his recent murals are those for the Sheraton Hotel and the Art Deco Lido Cinema, both in Newport Beach.
