RICHARD HAAS

Biographical Information

Haas (born 1936) is nationally known for his trompe l'oeil painted murals that create the illusion of windows, elaborate moldings, and other architectural details. After studying art at the universities of Wisconsin and Minnesota, he opened a studio in New York in 1968. He didn't do his first outdoor mural until 1973, after discovering the centuries-old tradition of painted architecture and illusionistic facades during two trips to Europe, especially southern Germany and Liguria, Italy. Haas has completed projects in such cities as Miami Beach, Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Dallas, New York, and Boston.
