Biographical Information
Painter, muralist, sculptor, restorer, and art administrator, Gonzalez (was 1939) was one of the pioneers of the Chicano mural movement in the 1960s. In 1969 he and his brother Juan, along with David Botello, founded Goez Art Studio and Gallery in East Los Angeles, which has trained and promoted the work of numerous Chicano artists. After the major 1971 earthquake, Gonzalez was selected by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to lead the restoration effort to save the important art collection at San Fernando Mission. He also restored the Fletcher Martin mural in the San Pedro Post Office. In 1975 he was commissioned to head a team of Chicano muralists to create a 300-square-foot mural for the American Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. In 1988 he and artist Eddie Martinez supervised a two-year project at the City of Hope in Duarte to construct a shrine to La Virgen de Guadalupe.
