Biographical Information

Raised both in northern California and Vermont, Chamberlin (1873-1961) studied art at Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1908 he won a mural competition that provided him with a four-year scholarship to study the frescoes of Giotto and Tintoretto, as well as muralism under Frank Millet at the American Academy in Rome. Later, in California, he studied with watercolorist Alson Clark. After moving to Pasadena from New York City in 1920, he taught life painting and drawing at Otis Art Institute, then co-founded Chouinard Art Institute.
