EDWARD BIBERMAN
Biographical Information
Biberman's (1904-1986) favorite subjects were portraits, and urban and natural landscapes. During his long career he had more than 35 solo exhibitions in the United States and Europe, and wrote two books about his paintings. He also taught at the Art Center College in Pasadena from 1938-1950. Meetings in New York with Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco during the Great De- pression influenced him to question the relevance of his paintings and to become a champion of public murals. However, it wasn't until after his move to Los Angeles in 1936 that Biberman won his first two mural commissions both for the downtown Los Angeles Federal Building. When the building was remodeled in 1965, the murals were removed and placed in storage.
