JOHN GABRIEL BECKMAN
Biographical Information
Beckman (1899-1989) worked as a set designer, art director, and muralist. He was born in Astoria, Oregon. He came to Los Angeles in 1920, and soon was working for a company that specialized in church and theater restoration. He headed the 1927 decorating team for Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Unfortunately, several remodellings over the years have destroyed most of the early detail. He also did murals at the Towne House Apartments (now the Sheraton Towne House Hotel), but they are gone. When the Depression dried up his mural commissions, Beckman became a movie set designer, then later an art director. One of his last projects (at age 90) was the CBS comedy, Designing Women.
