JEAN GOODWIN AMES
Biographical Information
Goodwin Ames (1903-1986) was a painter, muralist, sculptor, and ceramicist. Born and raised in orange grove country near Santa Ana (in Orange County), she studied at Pomona College, graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, and received a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. She and artist Arthur Ames, whom she later married, also did New Deal mural projects at Newport Union High School in Orange County and in the San Diego Civic Center. The money she earned from participating in the Federal Art Project enabled her to pursue a master's degree from the University of Southern California. From 1940-1962 she served on the faculties of both Scripps College and the Claremont Graduate School.
