CHARLES ALSTON


Biographical Information

Alston (1907-1977) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, he and his family moved to New York City in 1914. Alston graduated from Columbia University. He was the first African-American supervisor of the WPA, directing New York's Federal Art Project (FAP). He was one of seven artists to paint murals in Harlem Hospital for the FAP (1936). He was a teacher and a magazine illustrator as well as a muralist. In 1970, he was appointed artist member of the New York Art Commission.
