Description
Aliso-Pico residents were surveyed door-to-door about their choices of community heroes to put in the mural. On the left are cultural symbols and figures from Mexican history, and images from an earlier era when Boyle Heights was home to many East European Jewish immigrants. To the right are contemporary leaders, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., actor Edward James Olmos, and Father Greg Boyle formerly of Dolores Mission Church. From the center the Virgin of Guadalupe extends her hands toward both the past and the present.
The artist, a Russian immigrant, volunteered for this project after becoming a U.S. citizen as a way of showing his appreciation to his adopted country.
