Back to Mural Rescue Program
MRP APPLICATION SUBMISSION
MCLA tries to target 2-4 additions to the Mural Rescue Program (MRP) annually. Anyone may submit a request for a mural to be considered for addition. Just complete the form below, or call or write MCLA to request a brochure.
Please review the following criteria that are carefully considered by the Board in adding candidate murals to the MRP:
Aesthetic merit: Works of established or potential artistic and historic importance, that demonstrate significant effort and thought, that demonstrate a high level of execution.
Geographic and cultural diversity: Support for maintenance serves the community as well as the art/artist. Importance of a mural to the neightborhood in which it is located is important.
Feasibility: The likelihood that work done will have a lasting effect; access and safety factors in doing the work.
Public access: MCLA is primarily committed to protecting mural art that is outdoors and easily viewed by the public.
Authorization: Once accepted into the MRP, work will be done only with prior signed authorization by the artist, if available, and the mural site property owner, if applicable.
The MRP offers the following types of assistance within stated limits:
Clean-up Session(s): Professionally supervised volunteers remove graffiti and wash down mural's wall surface.
Cleaning and coating media: MCLA provides cleaning soaps and solvents, as well as hoses, brushes and other hardware, at each clean-up session. Soluvar, Rhoplex, or other special application media are provided according to need.
Graffiti protection service: If it is determined to be needed, MCLA contracts application of sacrificial coating to the completed surface of the mural. Whenever the mural is vandalized, the coating is washed off, removing the graffiti with it, and reapplied.
Cash award: In the event that a small amount of money awarded directly to the artist will enable the necessary work to be done (eg., payment for paint to restore fading due to prior inferior quality paint), without direct MCLA assistance, a cash award may be made. Approved material(s) would be purchased by the artist, then reimbursed.
Technical Analysis: A professional needs assessment and cost/labor estimate will be provided for all murals selected for cleaning and/or coating protection. An analysis will be provided for some murals that may not ultimately be added to the ongoing maintenance program this year, but may be considered for future protection.
Restoration: Most restoration work will be beyond our financial scope. For murals of high merit, MCLA may provide a Technical Analysis (above). When possible MCLA may be able to provide assistance in the form of technical consulting or fund-raising sponsorship.
Ongoing: Once added to the Mural Rescue Program, MCLA assumes an ongoing commitment to maintaining the condition of a mural. While this cannot guarantee deterioration or destruction of a mural due to circumstances beyond our control, inclusion in the MRP translates into a continuing, not merely a one year, commitment.
